Meet Peekaboo, one of a new line of pâte de verre caterpillar brooches! Each one starts as a hand-fabricated argentium silver branch, hammered for texture, with willow leaves that curl and drape the way they do in nature. The caterpillar is pâte de verre, a French process where fine glass frit is packed by hand into a plaster mold, fired in the kiln, and then the mold is broken away to reveal the glass. It’s built from layers of dark green, lime, and a touch of red, and here it’s peeking out from under the leaves, as if it knows you’re watching. Because each caterpillar is made by hand in its own mold, no two are ever alike. I can echo the colors, but every one is its own one-of-a-kind creature.
I found pâte de verre in 2019, and I’ve been hooked on the way it lets me bring color and softness into silver. Like all my work, these pieces are inspired by nature and made to be worn and passed down.
