This vessel was born from Genevieve's response to the political climate of 2015 and 2016 — and to the ongoing reality that far too many lower-income people have been left without access to adequate healthcare. Today, she sees the piece as something akin to an artifact unearthed from an archaeological dig, a physical record of the hardship endured by the most vulnerable in our society across far too many years.
The teapot body is fabricated from brass sheet, its handle shaped through anticlastic forming — a technique that curves metal simultaneously in opposing directions, creating a distinctly organic, tension-filled form. The lid is composed of three layered brass discs, crowned with a sterling silver loop finial, while silver wire traces the circumference of the base. What began as a perfectly formed teapot was then deliberately distorted — hammered and smashed in areas to disrupt its symmetry. Once polished to a high shine, a patina was applied to further weather and distress the surface, leaving a piece that is at once beautiful and unsettling.
Life's Struggles does not ask to be admired from a comfortable distance. It asks to be reckoned with.
