Cicada Wing Earrings
These cicada wing earrings continue Genevieve's Missouri Flora and Fauna series, inspired by a piece of her own childhood. As a girl, she used to gather the discarded cicada casings each summer and pin them to her clothing like jewelry, often wearing several at once—a habit she still enjoys revisiting today.
Cicadas are a familiar, if noisy, part of Missouri summers, emerging from the ground in cycles and filling the trees with their signature buzzing song before the season winds down. Interestingly, the cicada belongs to the same insect order, Hemiptera, as the shield bugs featured elsewhere in this collection, and displays its own range of color variations. The lineage runs deep as well—cicada ancestors date back over 200 million years, meaning these insects have been singing through summers since long before recorded history.
Each pair of wings is saw-pierced entirely by hand and finished with a soft satin surface. Because they are individually hand-cut, no two pairs are ever quite alike, making every pair one of a kind. The earrings are notably lightweight and comfortable for everyday wear.
